Ping!

Ping!

I grab hold of the phone and see the missed messages and calls that accompany them. Without giving it a second thought, I press my thumb into the home button and the world reveals to me a reality that I am not prepared for.

As I read each letter on the screen and begin to process the message before me, I feel my stomach sink deeper and deeper – leaving me with an overwhelming sensation of emptiness. I continue reading and notice how everything around me appears to fade to darkness. Not a single thought is able to intrude those that stand before me. My body reacts at a quickening rate to the trauma and I begin to shake. The nausea worsens and my ears go mute to the sounds of the world beyond me.

I drop my phone and hear as the screen shatters upon landing on the tiled floor. I try everything in my power to keep my body upright. My heart rate quickens, beating faster and faster as each second passes. I lose control both physically and mentally, gasping for air as I try to process what has happened.

I fall to the ground, my eyes so filled with tears that I can no longer see, but the blindness escapes me because I know that in this exact moment, nothing would ever be the same.

“Have you heard what happened?”

..

“Pick up your phone”

“Seriously this is fucked”

..

..

“I just woke up and Liam called me freaking out”

“I don’t know how to say this to you..”

“James is dead”
